SCHOTT Aspherical Lens Caps


Aspherical lens caps utilize low temperature solder glass technology to hermetically seal a low Tg glass molded asphere into a machined body (typically TO cap). They are widely used in the data- and telecommunications industries, as well as certain special customer-specific applications.



Product Description

SCHOTT aspherical lens caps are manufactured by sealing molded aspheres to metal caps with glass-to-metal sealing (GTMS) technology. We offer caps of two low Tg glass types, namely P-LaSF47 and P-SF56. Due to the high refractive indices, caps of these glass types provide high coupling efficiency in regular data- and telecommunications applications.

Technology

Leveraging on our in-house glass melting and development capabilities, SCHOTT is able to mold aspheres of extremely small diameters (min. diameter 1.6mm). This glass asphere and a metal frame are then soldered together in a cleanroom environment to ensure that the narrow tolerances of the optical properties are not compromised. It is extremely important to ensure that the glass component is not affected and not altered during the soldering process.

A variety of different geometric shapes can be realized with the soldering procedure. The use of various processes, such as sintering and dispensing, enables the production of a broad range of different shapes. The metal frames can also be manufactured using a lathe, which ensures accurate manufacturing of metal parts, and enables the application of even narrower tolerance ranges.
